PR2 Short-distance trail

Alto do Formosinho

This linear route runs along the northern and southern slopes of the Arrábida Mountains to Portinho da Arrábida, passing through the highest point of the mountain range, Alto do Formosinho, marked with a geodesic landmark at 501 metres. This route, which is more difficult, is the closest to mountaineering conditions due to the steep incline and the characteristics of the terrain.

It is one of the most charismatic routes in the region, due to its connection to the first settlements in Arrábida (Castelo dos Mouros rock formation) and the ancestral pilgrims' candles of devotion to Nossa Senhora da Arrábida, which remain, due to the challenge of reaching the peak, through dense vegetation, gravel areas and rock climbing, and also for the endless landscapes that connect the Sado estuary to the Tagus estuary and the finisterra border with the ocean.

Developing along the edge of the Arrábida Natural Park's total protection zone, it stands out for its Mediterranean vegetation, dense shrubbery, and the inhospitable characteristics of an unaltered location. At the end of the route, we find the Convent of Arrábida, located on the southern slope of the Arrábida Mountains, which dates back to the 16th century. Nearby, there are several watchtowers, the Chapel of Bom Jesus and the Old Convent, which are well worth a visit. This is owned by the Oriente Foundation, so you must book your visit in advance.

STARTING POINT
(38°31’8.76”N; 9° 0’47.65”W)

It starts in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, at Praça da República (Rossio), next to the Azeitão Tourist Office.

END

(38°28’15.10”N; 8°59’29.68”W)

It ends at EN379-1, near the junction for Portinho da Arrábida.

TIPS

The terrain requires footwear with strong grip. Given the predominance of rocky and clayey terrain, it is not recommended to take this route during the rainiest months, such as December and January.

SUPPLIES

Before starting the climb, supplies are available at the Picheleiros Campsite and, at the end, at Portinho da Arrábida.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This route is physically very demanding, similar to mountain trails, both in terms of the steepness of the terrain and the skill required to complete it. On the uphill section, you will encounter a very steep rock face, and on the downhill section, there are short sections of climbing and very steep paths. Also on the downhill section, in rainy months, the descent becomes very slippery and demanding.
