PR4 Short-distance trail
Villages of Azeitão
The “Aldeias de Azeitão” route, in addition to the natural splendour that characterises this region, offers cultural attractions and several points of heritage interest. You can do the whole route or opt for a shorter one, following the signs for the PR 4.1 variant, at 6 kilometres.
As you travel along this route, you will learn about the origins of Azeitão, a territory located in the heart of the Arrábida Natural Park, whose name, of Arabic origin, derives from azzeittum, due to the extensive olive groves that were found here. Its boundaries date back to medieval times and its origins lie in agriculture, namely the cultivation of vines and olive trees, which shaped the landscape and still dominate the farms and small settlements. Shaded by the Arrábida Mountains, Azeitão gained prestige from the 15th century onwards as one of the favourite areas of the Portuguese aristocracy.
Starting and ending in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, this route takes us through Aldeia Rica, Oleiros, Aldeia de Irmãos, the villages of Piedade, Portela and São Pedro, Casais da Serra and Picheleiros, always under the imposing Serra da Arrábida and its most traditional paths.
The shorter variant (PR4.1) is ideal for those with a special interest in cultural heritage, as well as natural heritage, allowing you to discover the various chapels, fountains and emblematic sites that make Azeitão such a rich place in terms of history.
